Nominations are now open for city elections to be held Nov. 7. Every city in Greene County will elect council members and all but Jefferson will vote on their mayors.
Nomination papers are available from city clerks or the Greene County auditor. They are also available online. Jefferson candidates must have at least 25 signatures on their petitions. Dana requires just five signatures. The rest of the towns in the county need a minimum of 10 signatures.
The deadline for filing nomination papers with the auditor’s office is Thursday, Sept. 21, at 5 pm.
This will the first general election in Jefferson at which council members will be elected at large. The city council eliminated council wards a year ago. The positions now held by Larry Teeples, Gary Von Ahsen and Harry Ahrenholtz are up for election.
Also, a council person must be elected from District 2 to complete a term to expire in 2019. Lisa Jaskey was elected from District 2 in 2015. After she resigned due to relocation, Dan Benitz was the winner in a special election last November to fill the position. He resigned in May and Matt Wetrich was appointed to fill the seat until a general election. The position will become an at large seat when it expires in 2019.
In Grand Junction, mayor Teresa Lansman was appointed earlier this year to fill a vacancy when Dave Kersey resigned. That position is on the ballot in the general election.
The terms of the following city office holders in other county towns will be on the November ballot:
• Churdan: Mayor Jolene Killeen; council – Heidi Geisler and Nick Christensen
• Dana: Mayor Mandy Sims; council – Chis Vargas and Tony Sims
• Grand Junction: Mayor Teresa Lansman; council – Randy Frantz, Pierre Kellogg and Melody Larson.
• Paton: Mayor Steve Burrell; council – Matt Fox and Diane Hanlon.
• Rippey: Mayor Daniel Brubaker; council – Donald Carpenter and Garry Higgins.
• Scranton: Mayor Randy Winkelman; council – Marilyn Jacobsen and Cole Gustoff; council, to fill a vacancy, Orvie Umbaugh.
